Jeff Koons

Galerie Max Hetzler / Holzwarth Publications, Berlin 2009
With texts by Anette Hüsch and Gudrun Inboden

‘The flawlessly smooth surfaces of Koons’ paintings, which scrupulously avoid the personal brushstroke, the pastose, and the variations in intensity, do not differ substantially from those of his painted or polished sculptures. Both are characterized by opaque two-dimensionality, by an absence of space notwithstanding a wealth of shapes and colors, and by a lack of depth despite the abundance of associations and reflections. The fact that these surfaces lack haptic characteristics makes them literally untouchable and thus all the more tactile to the eye. They “visualize” the urge to touch in terms of pure desire.’

G. Inboden, ‘Life will be a close-up’, in Jeff Koons, exh. cat., Berlin: Galerie Max Hetzler and Holzwarth Publications, 2009 p. 28
