Glenn Brown: The Real Thing

Holzwarth Publications, Berlin 2023, in collaboration with Sprengel Museum and Landesmuseum Hannover

This catalogue was published on the occasion of the exhibition The Real Thing at the Sprengel Museum and Landesmuseum Hannover, Hanover, 24 February – 18 June 2023.
The publication condenses the key ideas of the exhibition, which presents Brown’s work alongside a selection of historical masterworks from the two collections. In this way, Brown brings continuities and contrasts from 500 years of painting into a contemporary dialogue. The publication contains new texts by Jurriaan Benschop, Katja Lembke, and Reinhard Spieler, as well as a conversation with the artist.

‘In all of my work, really, the subject is paint. I like the viscosity, the color, the translucency and just the material gooiness of paint and that is quite an abstract subject to have. So that’s why I loosely bring in elements of the human body, just to embellish my paintings with paint. It seems to be a completely back-to-front way of making a painting, but it somehow works for me.’
