‘Grey withholds all colours from the eye, because, as Goethe noted, their specific qualities mutually cancel each other out, in grey, which concomitantly contains them all, as Paul Klee knew. Grey, being what Odilon Redon termed “the quintessence of colour”, is the potential colour par excellence. A colour not of borderlines or contrasts like black and white or the colours of the spectrums, but rather the colour of the mean and in-between, grey is not least the potential colour of all figuration. Its position in the “centre of the whole between the dimensions”, as Klee put it, owes to the “dynamis” of displacement and gradual transition, in both spatial and temporal terms. Because grey, per se, does not exist. It emerges – as a result of the reciprocal cancelling out of the colours of which it consists.’
