Albert Oehlen: Spiegelbilder / Mirror Paintings

Galerie Max Hetzler / Holzwarth Publications, Berlin 2005
Edited and text by Katja Hesch

‘In Oehlen’s approach, the viewer becomes a direct participant, whereas painted mirrors merely create an illusion of direct participation. Painted mirrors duplicate the reality of the picture, whereas in Oehlen’s works, it is always actual reality that is reflected. The viewer is thrown back at him/herself and inevitably meets with his/her own appearance. The picture’s immanent orientation confuses. The image in the mirror remains two-dimensional and the backdrop cannot be actually entered.’
